Based on the
novel BOOKKEE KYOUTEE (Something Awful) by Shimako Iwai, this is the story
of an American journalist (Drago) who comes to an Island of Prostitutes
in search of his missing lover. Inside a sewage-of-a-brothel, he befriends
a disfigured whore (with a most unexpected birth defect) who tell him
- in graphic detail - about the final torturous days of his beloved's
life.
This episode,
originally shot for the MASTERS OF HORROR series, was supposed to have
run on Showtime in early 2006, however the cable network canceled abruptly
without airing it. Director Miike commented that he wasn't surprised by
the decision and admits that his story of baby-killing, needle-torture
and misogyny is his "most extreme venture into horrific cinema."
Domestic
release; widescreen (1.85:1), uncut (63 min.) version in DVD encoded
for REGION ONE NTSC, playable on any American DVD machine; in English
language with tons of extras including interviews and "Making of"
documentary.
